nickelodeon fellowship – maybe next year…

i didn’t hear anything from nickelodeon last week, so unfortunately that means i didn’t make it. i’m disappointed, but i knew going in that it was going to be very competitive, and that was my first attempt at writing a tv spec script.

i plan to submit again next year. i’ll write another spec, maybe another office or a 30 rock, and spend more time on my application essays.

congratulations to those who made it to the next round, and good luck!

animation mentor: 209 butterfly kick

here’s the animation so far for my butterfly kick.

i changed the first little skip he takes, and adjusted the timing to make the entire kick faster. i used the arc tracker a lot to make sure there were smooth arcs for his hips and his feet.

the final version is due next week. i want to pay attention to the overlap throughout, and fix the final pose he takes.

waiting for nickelodeon

i applied for the nickelodeon writing fellowship back in february, and i’ve been waiting and thinking about it every day since then. they’re supposed to start notifying by the end of august, which means this week. the waiting is killing me!

here are the dates posted on their site:
~ Semi-finalists will be notified by the end of August, 2009

~ Finalists will be notified by the beginning of September 2009

~ Chosen Fellows will be notified by the end of September 2009

~ All others will be notified, by mail, by the end of October 2009

animation mentor: 208 butterfly kick (blocking)

here is the blocking pass on my butterfly kick.

animation mentor 207:butterfly kick

for the last animation of term 2, i was going to do a ballet sequence, but my mentor talked me out of it. he told the whole class we should do something simple and really nail it instead of trying to do something too complex. i looked at the video reference for the ballet move and thought yeah, it is a little complex with a lot of subtle weight changes. so instead, i decided to go with a butterfly kick.

i found 2 videos on youtube. the first one has a nice set up into the kick, where he really winds up his arms. the second video is a kick done with much more power, and has nice follow through upon landing.

animation mentor 207: parkour (final)

here’s my finished parkour animation.

my mentor gave me some notes for the revision:

  1. make him accelerate into the run. right now, he gets to full speed instantly.
  2. compress his upper body more when he jumps into the pole.
  3. fix the arcs on his jump from the pole to the wall, mostly his head and his hips.

animation mentor 206: parkour (animating)

here’s my first pass at animating the parkour movement.

my writing group friend who’s an animator suggested really exaggerating the anticipation before the run, and my mentor suggested i have him jump off the wall instead of look back. i think it’s working much better now. the final polish is due next week.

concept art to finished product

last summer i did some concept art for an upcoming web series called the resistance. i noticed how some of my designs made it into their trailer. below are some pictures of my original art along with screen grabs from the trailer.

animation mentor 205: parkour (blocking)

here’s the blocking pass on my parkour animation. we had to do walk cycles last term, but this is my first time animating a run.

CAPE digital shorts program

i heard about this new program sponsored by the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE) where you submit a short script under 10 pages, and the winner gets $5,000 to shoot the short as well as guidance from a mentor. submission was from may 1 to july 31, but i didn’t even hear about it until about a week or so before the deadline.

luckily, i had an old short horror script, Camera Obscura, that was one of the finalists in the DC Shorts screenwriting contest a couple years ago. i shortened that script from 11 pages to 10, and fixed the ending a little bit.

all 4 short films i’ve made so far have been comedies, so i would love to try shooting something in a different genre. the winner will be announced in october. wish me luck!
